Heal the Hauraki

At its heart, it’s a storytelling and education initiative that connects everyday New Zealanders to the incredible restoration work already happening across Tīkapa Moana / the Hauraki Gulf — and invites them to be part of the solution.

We know that when people feel overwhelmed or disconnected, they step back. But when they see possibility, hope, and a clear pathway forward, they step in. Heal the Hauraki works to dissolve the perception barriers that keep people on the sidelines by reshaping the stories we tell about our oceans — shifting us from fear and fatigue to participation and purpose.

Through uplifting multi-platform storytelling, we amplify the voices of local leaders, kaitiaki, scientists, communities, and organisations who are proving that healing is not just possible — it’s already underway. Their mahi becomes an invitation: Come join us. Everyone is welcome.

Our ActionHub makes that invitation real and accessible, turning good intentions into tangible steps. By rebuilding trust in environmental media, we transform confusion into clarity, and concern into collective action.

Heal the Hauraki is a bridge: between leadership and community, between science and story, between caring and taking action. By weaving together western and Indigenous knowledge systems, media psychology, and proven behavioural frameworks, we’re creating a cultural shift — one rooted in hope, possibility, and shared responsibility.

This is more than a media project. It is a charitable act of narrative restoration. Because when we restore the story we tell about our ocean, we restore our relationship with it — and each other.
