Dear Baghdad Skatepark Donors, 

We are thrilled to share that our partners at Make Life Skate Life kicked off construction of Baghdad Skatepark earlier this month! The park, located at the Ministry of Youth and Sports grounds in central Baghdad, is currently being constructed by a team of international and Iraqi volunteers. The project was realized over the course of 5 years as a collaboration with Make Life Skate Life, Baghdad Skatepark Project, Un Ponte Per, Iraq’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, Suli Skatepark and countless other contributors. Thank you for helping make this project a reality! 

This groundbreaking, free-of-charge venue is set to become a vibrant hub for skateboarders and community members alike, promoting creativity, athleticism, and social engagement among the youth of Baghdad. More than just a place for recreation, the skatepark is a testament to reclaiming public spaces for youth and women, fostering unity, and building a new vision for Baghdad. By offering a platform for self expression, teamwork and personal growth, the skatepark will positively impact the lives of hundreds, potentially thousands of young people. 

The design, developed in collaboration with Baghdad Skateboarders, features a variety of ramps and obstacles tailored for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced, encouraging first time users of all ages while ensuring the ongoing progression of existing skateboarders. In addition to offering a place for skaters to hone their skills, the park will host workshops, competitions, and community events throughout the year, aimed at building a strong and inclusive skate culture in Baghdad. 

Also, two documentary films, directed by filmmaker Tarek Turkey, are currently in production. One is a cinematic essay exploring the life of a skilled skateboarder in Baghdad, while the other documents the construction of the city's first skatepark. Release dates have yet to be announced. 

If you are in Baghdad, or able to make it to Baghdad, you are invited to celebrate the grand opening on January 25, 2025 at 14:00-17:00, 8CMW+QQ5, Baghdad, Baghdad Governorate. The opening event is free and open to the public, aiming to unite the community in celebration of this exciting new addition to Baghdad. There will be live music, skate demonstrations, and workshops for skaters of all skill levels.
