Kauri Pod concept

Kauri Pod was created to address homelessness with a fully enclosed, weather-protected sleeping capsule that restores dignity, safety, and wellbeing.

About

Kauri Pod was developed in response to the visible and growing need for safe, dignified sleeping solutions for people experiencing homelessness and rough sleeping across Aotearoa New Zealand. The concept emerged from direct observation of the risks faced by people sleeping rough, including exposure to weather, illness, violence, and ongoing instability.
The initiative was shaped through research into harm-reduction models, engagement with community feedback, and consideration of solutions that could be rapidly deployed while respecting dignity and wellbeing. This led to the design of a fully enclosed, weather-protected sleeping capsule that provides warmth, privacy, and basic security, with solar-powered charging to support connection to essential services.
The name Kauri Pod reflects the strength, protection, and resilience symbolised by the Kauri tree, acknowledging Māori values while serving all New Zealanders in need. The project is guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and is intended to operate in partnership with community and homelessness service providers.
Kauri Pod has now progressed to the charitable trust approval stage, with governance, safeguarding, and health and safety policies established to meet Charities Services NZ requirements. The founding team is committed to contributing over 3,000 voluntary hours to deliver the first working prototype, demonstrating a strong commitment to social impact, accountability, and long-term community benefit.
