About
Lead Aware NZ educates mums and families to protect their kids from lead exposure and advocates for stronger legislative protections.
New Zealand is behind our international counterparts when it comes to protecting kids from lead poisoning. It's also an issue that is not generally on Kiwi parents' radar. UNICEF estimates 47,000 NZ kids have lead poisoning right now, with thousands more every year. This potentially can set them up for a lifetime of struggle with reduced IQ, learning difficulties, ADHD, impulsivity, reduced earnings as an adult, and so many more possible health problems including mental health issues, heart and kidney diseases. Even very low levels of exposure can cause adverse effects. While middle class families may have the resources to help their tamariki with interventions to overcome speech, developmental or learning delays, poorer families may not be able to do so, and hence lead exposure can further the cycle of poverty.
Studies show significant economic benefits to countries that reduce hazards from lead paint exposure. The research shows that smarter populations earn more money and pay more lifetime taxes, and incur less healthcare costs. It's a win-win for everyone.
Lead Aware NZ is working to update our laws and thinking for a best possible outcome for our children's future.
