Mid-summer update
Published on August 1, 2021 by Rachel Bentley
We’ve been a bit quiet lately but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy at Love North Southwark. The topic of food insecurity may have dropped out of the headlines but we are continuing to provide a vital lifeline to many local families across Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.
The food pantry is going strong on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at Cherry Garden Hall. We have around 35 regular visitors each week and average around 10 newcomers a week. We also continue to deliver free food parcels to shielding households when we have enough stock.
We have not been immune to some of the haulage issues affecting many of the big supermarkets. We are running low on tinned produce and other staples but last week we received plenty of fresh veggies and fruit, as well as LOTS of sausages! On occasion we’ve needed to supplement the Fareshare deliveries with some extra essentials from our local supermarkets. These costs come straight off the bottom line, but we want to make sure all of our guests have the opportunity to purchase a range of products from the pantry for their £5.
We will be open all through the summer, and as always we are tremendously grateful for the dedication of our volunteers. It’s their enthusiasm and dedication that keeps our spirits high and our doors open.
Thank you as always for your continued support whether it comes in terms of donations of money or time. We really do appreciate it.
Kathy and all the team at Love North Southwark
