About

Welcome to the National Top Surgery Fund fundraising page.

The National Top Surgery Fund provides grants for people pursuing top surgery* in 2022. Funds are distributed as $500 grants and may be used for any part of the top surgery process (hospital bills, doctor visits, transportation, housing, time off of work, etc.).

To apply for a grant, fill out the application form by December 12, 2021.

For many transgender and gender non-conforming people, top surgery* is a huge step towards feeling comfortable in their bodies. Getting top surgery* is life changing, but there are multiple barriers to access. Besides the social stigma that trans/gnc people face, the financial burden is a huge problem. Finding a surgeon can involve out-of-state travel, and getting insurance coverage can require multiple doctor and therapist visits. Insured surgery costs anywhere from $2000-$8000, and uninsured procedures can be upwards of $30,000. Even after surgery, being able to take time off of work for proper post-op healing isn’t always guaranteed. This fund is designed to help cover costs as well as provide some hope for anyone who is seeking top surgery* and feeling overwhelmed.

The first two grants are already funded. Any donations will go towards additional grants and will be accepted through December 12, 2021. On December 13, 2021 grant recipients will be randomly selected from the applicant pool. One grant is reserved for BIPOC** applicants only.

This is the first year of the National Top Surgery Fund and is focused around three main goals:
  1. Distribute funds to people pursuing top surgery*.
  2. Prove that a significant number of people need this financial assistance.
  3. Gather feedback for how to improve future grant cycles.

The National Top Surgery Fund is led by Jean Wildest (they/he) with assistance from King Perka $exxx (he/him), Parker Haines (they/them), Mick Douch (he/him), and logo design donated by Jimmie Swaggerty (they/he), president of QueerCoded Inc.

We want to hear your feedback! If you have any suggestions for the next grant cycle, please use the contact button at the top of this page, or email [email protected]

*Top surgery is a broad term intended to refer to any masculinizing gender affirming surgery on a person’s chest. For the purpose of this fund, top surgery includes bilateral mastectomy, breast reduction, or revision surgeries.
**BIPOC means Black, Indigenous, People of Color. It is used here to recognize that Black and Indigenous people are uniquely and severely impacted by systemic racism.

The Fine Print:
  • Donations for this grant cycle are accepted through December 12, 2021. Any donations after Dec. 12 will go towards future grants.
  • Donations are not tax deductible.
  • Donations go directly to grant recipients. No funds will be used for admin or other expenses.
  • Applications are accepted through 11:59pm CT December 12, 2021.
  • Please see application form for eligibility requirements.
  • Recipients are selected via a random number generator on December 13, 2021.
  • One grant is reserved for BIPOC** applicants only. All other grants are open to all applicants.
  • Funds will be distributed in $500 increments to grant recipients. Any remaining funds will be distributed evenly to awardees. (i.e. if $2064 is raised, four recipients will be granted $516 each)
  • The National Top Surgery Fund is NOT currently a charitable organization, or 501(c)(3) business.
