Update: First In-Lab Test of NPR GoBox Equipment
Published on January 6, 2025 by Watchara Amasiri
We are excited to share progress on the NPR GoBox Deployment in Thailand project! Our first in-lab test with all necessary equipment for the NPR GoBox was conducted successfully. Below are the details of the setup and the results achieved:
Equipment Used:
- New Packet Radio (NPR) Modem: The FUNtronics NPR-70 modem, an essential component for high-speed packet transmission over UHF frequencies.
- UHF TDMA Amplifier: This amplifier enhances signal strength, ensuring reliable communication across various terrains.
- Foldable 7-Element UHF Yagi Antenna: A portable yet powerful directional antenna that offers high gain for efficient signal reception.
- Wireless Access Point (AP): An older model repurposed to provide local WiFi connectivity for the NPR setup.
- Power Source: A robust 12V 100Ah LiFePO4 battery to ensure long-lasting operation, making the system suitable for emergency deployment in disaster scenarios.
Results:
The initial test yielded an impressive internet speed of 330 kbps, which is a significant achievement for wireless broadband connectivity using New Packet Radio technology. The combination of reliable equipment and an efficient design ensures that the system can deliver internet access in remote and disaster-prone areas.
Key Features of This Setup:
- Portability: With a foldable antenna and compact components, the system is designed for rapid deployment.
- Scalability: The modular design allows integration with additional nodes or GoBoxes for expanded coverage.
- Affordability: Utilizing readily available equipment keeps costs low, aligning with the goal of widespread adoption.
- Emergency Readiness: Powered by a durable battery, the system is perfect for off-grid usage during crises.
Next Steps:
- Field Testing: We will soon move this setup to outdoor environments to test its performance over longer distances and in varied conditions.
- Community Training: Workshops will be organized to train volunteers and technicians to deploy and maintain the NPR GoBoxes.
- Optimization: Efforts to optimize speed and network stability will continue as we refine the system.
This successful test marks a significant milestone in our mission to enhance communication infrastructure in Thailand. We are grateful for the support of the Open Collective community and look forward to sharing further updates as we progress.
Stay tuned for more updates as we take the NPR GoBox project to the next level!
