Cost of living crisis
Published on September 16, 2022 by Claire Sheppard

Reports of our demise may have been hasty after all.

With the ongoing pandemic, plus inflation going wild and the upcoming cost of living crisis, alongside other community groups we are rallying once more to offer support to our neighbours.

We would like to be able to offer people support if they need funds to charge their electric and gas keys of up to £25 per key per month.

To do so we will need those who can offer to contribute to help. If you can offer a monthly payment of £50, £25, £10 or even £5 this will help enormously. If you can only offer a one off donation that's amazing too. Thank you.

If you can't offer financial support but can offer time volunteering please reach out to Community Southwark who will be able to pair you up with volunteering opportunities. https://communitysouthwark.org/volunteering/volunteering-opportunities/

Do you claim gift aid back? If not then surely it's better to donate to an organization that does - it's worth so much more.

Absolutely agree, so we'd recommend donating to Pecan, WHYC, The Green, Funnel, Allbrighton Community Fridge, Feed the Hill and loads of other local charities who are already betetter situated than us to help with their established charities. Nunhead Knocks is planning that we'll be offering topups of people's electric and gas metres, it's a short term, quick admin free fix for people who don't have recource to other charities as they haven't been refered by the correct agency.

We can't claim gift aid as we're not a registered charity and are fiscally hosted on here for no fee as a quick facilitator of mutual aid. We're hoping to be another useful sttring in people's bows rather than take resources or time away from other groups, we'll be signposting volunteers to local groups people can help directly with time or money too.

This is just me updating this site so it's ready to go when we do a proper launch in the coming weeks, the foodbanks all need many more donations so we'll be doing a comms drive for them too.

Let me know if I can give any mor info in the meantime and I'll do my best to help! Claire

Hi Claire,
I have befriended a lady in her 80's I supported via Nunhead Knocks in April 2020 and have been doing her shopping, having coffees etc ever since. She's become part of our extended family.
We will be in Australia for 7 weeks over Xmas and I'm looking for someone who can get to know her and check in on her once a week. I'm setting her up with phone shopping with Sainsbury's so they wouldn't need to buy her anything. Do you know anyone locally? She's really good value, a retired local primary teacher.
Sorry I couldn't find an email for you so I'm reaching out this way.
Thanks

Hi Sonia, I'll drop you an email if that's ok? Unfortunately we don't still have a matching service as most of the volunteers dropped off as they went back to work, but we have a couple of whatsapp groups we can call upon.
I love that you made a real connection, loads of people did which is one of the loveliest things to have come out of all of this!
