To uplift and empower Pacific and Māori communities through culturally grounded, community-led programmes that nurture identity, belonging, and wellbeing.

About

The kaupapa of NUOWTR Moana Trust is to uplift and empower Pacific and Māori communities—particularly our tamariki, rangatahi, and MVPFAFF+/Rainbow youth—through culturally grounded, community-led programmes that nurture identity, belonging, and wellbeing. We believe in the transformative power of cultural connection, intergenerational learning, and youth-led development.

What Do You Do?
NUOWTR Moana Trust runs a range of initiatives including:
  1. Cultural and creative arts programmes for tamariki and rangatahi
  2. Holiday and after-school programmes focused on education, cultural identity, and leadership
  3. Rainbow and MVPFAFF+ initiatives (e.g. Le Va Whetū) that create safe, inclusive spaces for young people to explore identity and wellbeing
  4. Community research and consultations led by young people
  5. Mentoring and placement support for tertiary students in youth work, social services, and education
  6. Intergenerational projects, like Le Ao Sola, that connect youth with elders to retain cultural knowledge
  7. Capacity-building and advisory services for other organisations wanting to engage better with Māori and Pacific youth

Who Is Involved?
We are a collective of educators, youth workers, artists, cultural leaders, community researchers, and advocates with deep ties across Porirua, Wellington, and wider Aotearoa. Our team includes qualified professionals and lived-experience leaders who share a strong commitment to Pacific values, tikanga Māori, and grassroots change.

We also collaborate with:
  • Local schools and kura
  • Tertiary institutions like Whitireia & WelTec
  • Local councils and funders
  • Community and faith-based organisations
  • Elders, families, and of course, the youth themselves

What’s the Background Story?
NUOWTR Moana Trust was born out of a desire to create safe, culturally affirming spaces for our Pacific and Māori young people—particularly those from Porirua and surrounding communities. The name "Not Us Without The Rest" reflects our commitment to collective uplift, cultural safety, and inclusivity.

Originally a grassroots movement led by young leaders and community champions, the Trust has grown into a recognised provider of youth development, advocacy, and community-based education. Over the years, we’ve responded to the growing need for culturally appropriate programmes that reflect our peoples’ values, experiences, and aspirations.
