About
Why a Paid Newsletter:
- A well managed newsletter is a great way to get actual co-op members and prospective co-op members engaged. You may have noticed that the DMV co-op community sometimes suffers from an echo chamber effect where mostly co-op developers, financiers, and co-op technical assistance providers are actively talking to each other in seminars and webinars, but not so much to actual co-ops or even prospective co-op members.
A newsletter financed by the developers, financiers and technical assistance supporters of cooperatives, that subsidizes the cost for real co-ops to publicize is a great way to reel in new co-ops, connect the co-op ecosystem supporters to folks who want to start co-ops or are already in cooperatives.
- It distributes the labor burden. Since a community supported newsletter, housed in an established organization could be too much of a capacity burden, there needs to be a way to organize labor that is independent enough to provide content for the newsletter but organized enough to ensure the Newsletter gets created.
- It abstracts power. Now there is an equitable criteria which determines who gets to post on the Newsletter while fully subsidizing the costs of smaller fish (individuals who are just starting cooperatives or very small nascent cooperatives) to share their information on through our channels.
Why is my organization paying so much?
- Your fee was calculated based on the estimate of your organization’s yearly budget. Organizations with budgets over 500K are assigned the Gold Tier ($750), organizations with budgets between 250-500K are assigned the Silver Tier ($500) and organizations with anything below are assigned the Bronze Tier ($250). If you think we misassigned your organization please reach out.
- Solidarity! The idea is to pay (well) for the labor of the writers and content aggregators that will put the newsletter together as well as pay for the costs of less well financed cooperatives to publicize on the newsletter as well.
