April Update from OSC
Published on May 9, 2025 by Grace
Hello, OSC community, and happy Maintainer Month! We hope May is off to a great start. Looking back on April, the focus was all about organization -- both behind the scenes and out in the open.
Internally, the OSC team has been laying out the groundwork for growth. As you may have seen on our recent post, we’re in the process of hiring our fifth team member (a big milestone for OSC!), and that’s pushed us to take a closer look at how we work, document, and communicate as a team.
Externally, that same energy has gone into a major documentation overhaul. We’ve been updating and reorganizing our public-facing documentation to make them clearer, easier to navigate, and more useful to you, our hosted projects and the broader community.
📣 Announcements 📣
OSC Docs Refresh
We’ve refreshed our documentation to make it easier to find clear, helpful information about how things work at OSC, whether you’re part of a currently hosted project, exploring fiscal hosting with us, a funder, or just curious about who we are and what we do.

We’ve refreshed our documentation to make it easier to find clear, helpful information about how things work at OSC, whether you’re part of a currently hosted project, exploring fiscal hosting with us, a funder, or just curious about who we are and what we do.
What’s new:
- a simplified structure with clearer navigation organized by audience
- updated language for better readability
- improved guidance on common topics like expenses
- and more!
We’re always working to make our resources more useful, so feel free to share your feedback at [email protected].
GitHub Secure Open Source Fund
Applications are open for the second round of the GitHub Secure Open Source Fund, set to kick off in June. The deadline to apply is May 12. This program is suited for individual maintainers or small teams of open source projects. Teams that can benefit from education and community to tackle security in a scaled manner are welcome to apply.

Gathering Interest -- Community Swag Shop
We’re putting out early feelers for a new idea: a community-wide swag shop for OSC-hosted projects. If your project has been interested in offering swag but you don’t want to manage the logistics yourself, reach out to us to express interest. We’re exploring this as a way for projects to raise funds and increase visibility, and we’re gathering feedback to see how much interest there is across the community.
Signal boost: Open Source Lab at University of Oregon needs support
The Open Source Lab at Oregon State University, which has supported over 500 FOSS projects over the past 22 years, is facing potential closure due to a funding shortfall. Unless they secure $250,000 in committed funds, OSL may have to shut down later this year.
If you or your project has benefited from OSL’s hosting or mentorship, or if you're in a position to help, you can donate using project funds or reach out directly at [email protected].
