June Update for OSC
Published on July 9, 2025 by Grace

Hello, OSC community! We hope everyone is having a restful July so far. Below you'll find our June Community Update.

📣 Announcements 📣

Collective Cleanup
In the coming weeks, we’ll be reaching out to projects that may not currently meet our hosting terms and eligibility. This could include things like inactive/archived repos or projects with unclear licensing. This is part of an ongoing effort to better align with our mission and ensure we’re supporting sustainable, active projects.

If your project is affected, an email will be sent to the Open Collective admins on the project's account. Any outreach will include the specific issue in question and a timeline to respond.

OSC at UN Open Source Week
Our team was honored to participate in the UN Open Source Programme Office’s Open Source Week in New York City.

We still remember the days when everyone concerned about open source sustainability could fit into a small corner-office. That we now have a week-long event in the world’s strongest and most impactful intergovernmental organization is wild. We enjoyed conversations with representatives from government, industry, and our peers on subjects like identifying critical open source projects, better understanding their current demands and capacity, and how to activate and distribute government-scale resources to balance them.

We’d like to thank Micheal Downey and the team at the Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies for continuing to ensure this discussion gains traction and for working with the community to ensure the discussion is accurately informed by those who are most impacted.

It was also such a pleasure to meet members of our hosted projects in person. Often at conferences, the hallway tracks are the most productive. Just a reminder that you can always schedule a time to chat with us virtually as well. If you have questions about how we can better support your project or are wondering about other services we offer that might be of benefit, feel free to drop us a line at [email protected], and we’ll find a time to chat.

ICYMI: Virtual Card Update from Open Collective
Open Collective recently shared an update on virtual cards and we encourage you to give it a read here.

TL;DR: OSC is not a money service business, it's not a regulated banking provider or card issuer. As a result we have to use companies like Stripe to provide that service to us, but many find our organizational structure and work a little unconventional and, being risk averse, often refuse to provide us that service.

That said, OSC has been exploring our own path forward – one that works within our fiscal hosting program. This effort is separate from the Open Collective platform, but because all financial activity still runs through it, any solution we offer needs to scale and integrate smoothly.

We’re currently piloting a limited virtual card offering with a few well-established, active projects. Whether this becomes a long-term solution is still uncertain. OSC is just as eager to see a sustainable option return. We’ll keep everyone updated.

Sounds good. Hopefully the clean-up will result in more sponsors to active projects that really need the support, like my project, Ancient Beast 🐺
Keep up the good work! 🐻
