In my role as a coordinator and organiser for the Pest-Free Takarunga Hauraki Peninsula kaupapa, this is my mahi:
- Connecting residents of Takarunga Hauraki with each other around the pest-free kaupapa and a healthier natural world.
- Working to ensure all open public spaces in Takarunga Hauraki are trapped and have caretakers as soon as possible (where they aren’t already), including Ngā Maunga, Ngau te Ringaringa and Oneoneroa.
- Promoting and facilitating the development of urban wildlife sanctuaries in and around Maungauika, Takarunga, and the estuaries of Ngau Te Ringaringa and Oneoneroa. Focused support on community organising for pest-free halo zones around those urban wildlife sanctuaries.
- Collaborating with RTHCT staff and ropu kaimahi on support and empowerment for local communities and other stakeholder organisations. That is, those involved collectively in protecting and enhancing native biodiversity in Takarunga Hauraki. For example, TGS IB, Anne Street, St Francis, North Shore Croquet Club, Cheltenham Beach volunteers, etc.
- Catalysing emergence of a robust, effective, decentralised, suitably-funded, Takarunga Hauraki pest-free network, i.e., hosting volunteers, trappers, trapping groups, equipment maintainers, makers, volunteer organisers, backup volunteers, suppliers, supporters, advocates, educators.
- Working toward a sustainable, peninsula-wide deployment of maintained traps covering open spaces and private property (i.e., a high-density trapping grid).
- Exploring and promoting the use of transparent community budgeting, funding, decision-making, and information platforms for local, community-based, pest-free projects. E.g., Open Collective, Cobudget, Loomio, Trap.nz, etc.
- Facilitating communication relating to the pest-free kaupapa with local and social media.
- Facilitating educational/motivational workshops and events for volunteers/potential volunteers.
- Developing community-based tracking of pest-free progress including a possible community-implemented relative abundance tracker for rats. Facilitating contribution of community data (deployments, strikes) via applications such as Trap.nz to overlay any tracking results.
- Reporting progress and outcomes.
I generally spend 40-50 hours a week on various aspects of this kaupapa in a round-robin fashion, of which, 20 hours are currently funded, and the remainder is voluntary.
All support of my involvement in this kaupapa is greatly appreciated.
