About

Ahirau was the name our Nanny and NannyPa gave to the farm, found in the fertile Waiotahe Valley, west of Opotiki, on our tribal homelands of the Whakatōhea. Ahirau was a forty-five acre farm block made up of three large paddocks that carried a small herd of milking cows and rotational crops.

Nanny and NannyPa named the farm Ahirau after a prominent knoll just west of the Waiotahe pipi. The pipi bed was renowned for the abundance of pipi kai and it is told that the flames of the numerous cooking fires could be seen along the beach, hence the translation, one-hundred fires.

We use the name Ahirau as the name of our charitable organisation
