About
Atlantic Sea Salt from Guerande France
The salt of Guérande or Celtic Grey Salt is a type of sea salt that is harvested by hand from the salt marshes of the Guérande peninsula, located on the Atlantic coast of France. This salt has been produced in the region for over a thousand years and is known for its high mineral content, which gives it a distinct flavour and texture.
The salt is harvested using traditional methods that involve flooding the salt pans with seawater and then allowing the water to evaporate naturally in the sun and wind. This process can take several weeks, during which time the salt crystals gradually form on the surface of the water.
Salt is extracted from the salt pans water and the salt by precipitation remains on the ground where it is then collected. The salt crystals that form at the bottom of the carnation are larger and slightly grey. The colour of what is called grey salt is due to the contact with the clay on which the salt sits at the bottom of the eyelet.
All Guérande salt production is done manually according to an ancestral method. Overall, the salt of Guérande is prized for its unique flavour, texture, and mineral content, which make it a popular ingredient among chefs and food enthusiasts around the world.
The producer of Guérande salt is IGP ( Indication geographique protegee) labelled which allows to guarantee the origin as well as the high quality of our salt.
This hand harvest grey sea salt is unrefined and does not contain any additives. It is subject to humidity and should be kept in a dry place. Sea salt has no expiry date and has undergone a natural drying process, with the help of the sun, sea and wind.
Salt has been called ‘white gold’ and was enormously valuable throughout history, let us not forget that previously salt was used as a food preservative. Salt was widely used by the Ancient Chinese and Egyptians for Egyptian mummies but its existence goes beyond recorded history, into prehistory. There are apparently more than 14,000 documented uses for salt. It is used to preserve food flavour, as an essential mineral for people and animals, to gargle and fight a sore throat, as stain’s removal and descaler in the household or on icy roads.
Spiritually speaking, salt is considered the great neutraliser as it symbolises purity. It can help cleanse, heal and balance energy, while repelling negative vibrations. Salt is even believed to have magical properties and protect people from negative energy.
So while you add another pinch of salt because that might be all you need for that stew you're making on the stove, salt symbolises far more than a kitchen staple!
