What about the kids?

Published on April 21, 2021 by Alexa Pantuck

When people hear that we want hormones to be available for free and without regulation, one of the first concerns brought up is always "what about the kids?" At its heart, the concern is this: what if a cisgender (non-transgender) child is...

About

Our Mission:

Purple Pillars is an international socialist mutual aid group working towards making HRT (hormone replacement therapy) available to those who need it for free. Trans healthcare is gatekept by the state in a variety of ways; in the fight for bodily autonomy, we believe it is necessary to make these hormones available without regulation. Moreover, the transgender community faces rates of poverty and homelessness far greater than average, so these life saving medications need to be available for free. We will begin this mission here in the United States because there is no socialized healthcare, but eventually we aim to offer international coverage.

Phase 1 :

We will be reimbursing individuals for their hormones, beginning with US states with the lowest population and worst conditions. In the beginning we will be covering the following pilot states:
  • Wyoming
  • South Dakota
  • Idaho
  • Nebraska
  • Mississippi
  • Arkansas
  • Louisiana
As coverage here becomes stable, we will expand to the following states:
  • Alabama
  • Montana
  • South Carolina
  • Oklahoma
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Georgia
  • Arizona
  • Texas
And eventually covering the whole US, then becoming international.

Phase 2:

This is all well good for anyone that has the money upfront to buy their own hormones, but doesn't help those whose financial situation and needs are much more immediate and dire. Phase 2 will involve a verification process by which to send people the funds they need to purchase their hormones, rather than reimbursing them retroactively.

Phase 3:

Retail grey market hormones are expensive compared to the actual cost of manufacturing. For reference, we estimate that three months worth of estradiol valerate is worth less than a dollar. Thus, phase 3 involves buying hormones in bulk (wholesale) from international hormone manufacturers, and distributing individual doses as needed.
