About

Re~Common Norwich are interested in exploring ways to re-claim, create, and reproduce the Commons in and around Norwich. We are a collective of people organized as a Cooperative, which means we believe and apply the cooperative values of;
  • Self-help
  • Self-responsibility
  • Democracy
  • Equality
  • Equity
  • Solidarity
We want to create, and support the creation of, conversations and practical projects to further this goal and in the spirit of this we hope to collaborate with organisations and people across the city.

A vision for Norwich (and the world!)
We believe in a city that is owned and run by the people, for the people.
  • Where communities have a real say, and real control over the decisions that impact their lives.
  • Where social and ecological needs are what matters, and not the endless pursuit of profit.
  • Where community and creativity are central.
Most importantly, we believe that this is possible.

What do we mean by Commons?
Commons require a community. No community, no commons.

Commons can be viewed as the existence of a shared property, in the form of shared natural or social wealth. This could be things such as land, water, buildings, or even knowledge or capacities for care. But more than that, it is about how people relate to this shared wealth, they are only Commons with active participation from community.

Commons are there to be used by all commoners (the people/society), without any distinction, and are not for sale!

Why ‘Re~Common’?
Our name is a call to action. We see the process of reclaiming and creating commons as something just as valuable as the commons themselves. It is a process by which we can learn to work together, experiment, and find new ways to organise our communities, resources, and daily lives.

Many of our commons have been taken from us over time, stripped away, made private, and commercialised - hence ‘Re~Common’.

Despite this call to reclaim, we do not want to return to the past, or the old way of doing things, even though it can inspire us. Within our call to reclaim the commons is the idea that we must explore new ways of doing things, experiment and look to the future.

Projects
We are seeking to secure a community space in Norwich to create a Social Centre.

We want this space to be a hub of thinking and doing, where people and organisations can come together to share knowledge and resources, experiment, and to build community.

The centre will be a space to explore ideas around
  • Radical democracy
  • Cooperative and Solidarity Economy
  • Community power
  • Ecology and environmental justice
  • Collective care and mutual aid
This will differ from many other community spaces, and is not an end in itself, but a space from which to expand and grow the ideas of Commons and Cooperation into wider society.
