About
Who we are
shiftbloom studio. is an open collective for responsible digitalization, public-interest technology, and independent research, based in Hamburg. We develop open-source tools, research frameworks, and transparent digital systems that aim to make technology more accessible, reliable, privacy-conscious, and accountable.
We believe digital progress should not be measured only by speed, scale, or novelty. It should also be judged by whether it protects people, preserves individual agency, supports participation, and makes the systems shaping everyday life understandable enough to question and improve.
Our work therefore sits at the intersection of software engineering, AI safety, information integrity, privacy, and digital governance.
What we do
Our work is centered on three closely connected areas:
- Public-Interest Digitalization: We create open-source tools, libraries, and reference implementations for accessible, adaptive, and maintainable digital systems. Projects such as symphony-state, birthday-cake-loading, and circadian-ui explore better approaches to application architecture, capability-aware delivery, accessibility, and human-centered interface design.
- Digital Safety and Responsible AI: We research and build practical methods for reducing risks within increasingly automated digital environments. The open-hallucination-index explores factual consistency, claim-level verification, and inspectable evaluation for generative AI, while the openai-privacy-filter-api provides an open implementation for detecting and protecting privacy-related information. Across these projects, we prioritize traceability, data minimization, human oversight, and systems whose behavior can be examined rather than simply trusted.
- Independent Research and Governance: We develop and publish research around AI reliability, structured knowledge, information integrity, responsible automation, and the governance of complex digital systems. The studio provides an applied environment in which theoretical ideas can become open prototypes, evaluation methods, technical frameworks, and publicly accessible documentation. Research outputs led by Fabian Zimber are documented through his ORCID research record.
Photography remains a smaller creative strand of shiftbloom studio.—a practice of observation, documentation, and visual research that complements, rather than defines, the collective’s technical and research mission.
Why we are on Open Collective
Open-source software and independent research require lasting support beyond an initial publication or release. Infrastructure, documentation, maintenance, security work, evaluation, and responsible governance all require time and sustained care.
Through Open Collective, we can fund this work transparently while retaining the independence to prioritize public value and long-term stewardship rather than forcing every experiment into a commercial product.
