About

Southside Food Co-op, Inc (SSFC) was formed in 2020 to provide a comprehensive, sustainable, community-based solution to address food insecurity in an area designated as a food desert by the USDA. SSFC is dedicated to providing fresh, healthy, and nutritious food to communities in need at the most affordable prices.

For several years, over 200,000 residents of Chicago’s South Side have had limited access to fresh, good quality, affordable foods, thus forcing many residents to travel to more distant grocery stores in order to gain access to these foods. And in order to address the food insecurity issues faced by these residents, the planning group for Southside Food Co-op is working toward the development of a community-owned grocery store that would fulfill the communities’ need for a healthier/fresh/good quality food store, while also creating jobs and greater wealth within the community, providing more opportunities for local farmers, and allowing the residents to buy a share of the grocery store and have a say in its operation.

SSFC’s cooperative business model places people over profit and adheres to cooperative principle number seven: concern for the community.

The vision is to mitigate food insecurity and improve overall health and well-being, while engaging the members and the community in the design, development, opening, and sustainment of the cooperative, and providing a sales channel for local food producers and artisans.
