Graffiti Art Project - Safer Streets
PROJECT
Part of: Spacemakers Bristol
Fiscal Host: The Social Change Nest
This project is designed to give some of the YP in the area a sense of ownership over a local space. Just like 19 years ago!

About
The Spacemakers team has won funding from Safer Streets to run a Graffiti Project, in connection with Hartcliffe Club for Young People (HCYP). Simon from HCYP has connected us up with a group of Young People, and a graffiti artist called Duncan who has experience on similar projects, working with young people, and designed art with local groups.
We will be running THREE workshops - to help educate the YP on the Space itself, on the project and also to have practical experience of Spray Painting!
Subsequent to the successful delivery of these workshops, we will be adding graffiti onto the Shelter (known by some as the Lozenge because of its shape), which will be lead by Duncan, assisted by Simon from HCYP and attended by many others.
2nd September - Session One Completed!
We all met at Spacemakers, and used pen and paper to create designs relevent to the subject matter - which was agreed as outer space.
Additionally we then used non permanent pens to draw designs on the shelter including some of to those in the pictures.
This was an introductory session, where all the young people met the adults running the project - and brainstormed some amazing ideas of what their visions of outer space was.

9th September - Session Two Completed!
Our second session had the young people practice at the local Youth Centre on approved surfaces, with designs of outer space. This was on a section of a container which already included some graffiti art - along with an external cover to a box for the Youth Centre.
They used stencils made by Duncan, who gave them all an introduction to the technique used to spray paint effectively, and we had some amazing art results, check out the image below!!

16th September - Session Three Completed!
Our third session was very exciting. We have put a lot of thought into what we want on the shelter, and seperately, how to put the designs into action. But the surface was covered in graffiti and in no state to put our amazing designs in place.
We bought a large put of black Hammerite paint - and spent the session making the shelter BLACK. Outer space is black, and this covered all of the existing graffiti well, and which would enable the young people to put their own stamp on the shelter.

7th October - Installation Completed!
The installation has taken the initial designs, the skills developed learning how to spray paint, and put them together adding some amazing art onto the blank canvas from the third session.
The installation is the result of three weeks of learning, where the participants developed their skills in spray painting and applied them to the initial designs. Our product is a stunning piece of art created by 15 young people from Hartcliffe and Withywood.
The final product is a bright and colourful depiction of outer space, with each participant contributing their own unique touch to the blank canvas from the third session.
The installation is not only visually impressive, but also showcases the creativity and talent of the young people involved. Check out the photos below to see the amazing artwork and read some of the comments from the participants themselves.
