LGBTQ Housing Vouchers in Kenya

Homelessness among the LGBTQ community in Kenya is a severe and growing issue. Due to societal stigma, discrimination, and violence, many LGBTQ individuals are rejected by their families and communities, forcing them into precarious living conditions or onto the streets. The lack of safe, inclusive housing options leaves many at risk of exploitation, abuse, and further marginalization.
In response to this crisis, our organization is launching a Housing Voucher Program aimed at providing immediate, safe, and dignified housing solutions to LGBTQ individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. This program is designed to offer temporary relief through housing vouchers, while we work on long-term solutions and advocacy for systemic change.

The primary objective of the Housing Voucher Program is to provide immediate housing support to 200 LGBTQ individuals and families in Kenya by the end of the year. The program will focus on:

1. Emergency Housing Vouchers: Issuing vouchers to LGBTQ individuals and families in urgent need of safe housing. These vouchers will cover rental costs for up to 6 months, providing a stable environment while participants transition to permanent housing.
2. Comprehensive Support Services: Offering wraparound services including mental health support, legal assistance, and connections to long-term housing and employment opportunities.
3. Advocacy and Awareness: Working with local authorities, NGOs, and community organizations to advocate for more inclusive housing policies and increase awareness about the challenges faced by LGBTQ homeless individuals.

The total budget required for this project is $100,000. Below is a detailed breakdown of how the funds will be utilized:

1. Housing Vouchers: $70,000
   • Provide 200 LGBTQ individuals and families with housing vouchers.
   • Each voucher will cover rent for up to 6 months.
   • Average cost per voucher: $350 per month x 6 months = $2,100.
   • $2,100 x 200 individuals/families = $70,000.
2. Comprehensive Support Services: $15,000
   • Mental health support, including counseling sessions and support groups: $6,000.
   • Legal assistance, including aid for documentation and advocacy: $5,000.
   • Employment and skills training programs: $4,000.
3. Program Administration and Management: $10,000
   • Program coordination and operational costs.
4. Advocacy and Awareness Campaigns: $3,000
   • Outreach, education, and advocacy efforts aimed at promoting inclusive housing policies.
5. Monitoring and Evaluation: $2,000
   • Track program effectiveness, document outcomes, and report on the impact.

• 200 LGBTQ Individuals and Families Housed: Secure safe and stable housing for 200 LGBTQ individuals and families, providing them with the foundation to rebuild their lives.

• Reduction in LGBTQ Homelessness: A measurable decrease in the number of LGBTQ individuals experiencing homelessness in targeted areas, with a focus on Nairobi and other urban centers.

• Increased Awareness and Advocacy: Strengthen efforts among local organizations and stakeholders to address LGBTQ homelessness, leading to policy changes and increased support for inclusive housing initiatives.

• Sustainable Housing Pathways: Establish partnerships with landlords, housing providers, and community organizations to create sustainable housing pathways for LGBTQ individuals, ensuring long-term stability beyond the voucher period.
