About
This is part of a two-phased project
Purpose: Regeneration of Indigenous Tongan women's practice, shared knowledge, and Ngatu (Koloa/ Taonga) and navigate the safe and trusted use of Disruptive Technology Innovation for data and cultural sovereignty.
Purpose: Regeneration of Indigenous Tongan women's practice, shared knowledge, and Ngatu (Koloa/ Taonga) and navigate the safe and trusted use of Disruptive Technology Innovation for data and cultural sovereignty.
Strategy: to provide a safe space for Tongan women to share research outcomes and co-create new tech solutions. We will build a strong relationship with this community to drive long-term change and establish a foundation for future growth.
Significance: The project aims to create technology solutions with an Indigenous ethical approach that safeguards and protects our communities and ways of life. This is in response to the common practice of developing technology without considering the users or creating models that can cause harm in an unethical or biased way.

Phase 1 focus: We will collaborate with up to 7 Auckland-based Tongan women's Indigenous Ngatu exchange/production groups, networks, and collectives. Tongan women collectives and groups from outside Auckland can also join us at their own cost, as funding may not be available this time around.
Target: Our target audience is Tongan women who are interested in Ngatu knowledge and taonga, especially those living outside of Tonga. During this phase, we will primarily focus on an Auckland-based Tongan women's collective, but Tongan women from anywhere in New Zealand are welcome to participate.

Community focussed partnerships
My team: consists of Jayne King, a professional weaver and communications expert, who is also a Pasifika arts collective member, and Dibor Fulivai, who will lead the communication strategy in the diaspora and Tonga. Dibor is the youngest and only brother of a current Tongan Noble, and he has significant connections and influence in Tonga.
Capacity needed: I do aim to bring on board two other key roles, project coordinator and community coordinator.
Community Partnerships: We will be working with
- Langima'a Counselling Services to lead a clinical cultural holistic well-being session at the workshop/ conference event.
- Katokakala Akoteu Early Childhood Centre in Otara, as an ECE in Auckland, uses Ngatu knowledge in their curricula and practice of embedded, language emersion learning centers. This is led and owned by Tongan women experts, and pioneers in the ECE sector.
- Reengage MPI experts (biosecurity risks) sessions and various tech specialists (VR, APP).
Project Detail:
We will work with Tongan women collectives in NZ and Tonga to raise awareness and increase collaboration and information sharing by and for Tongan women worldwide.
We will work with Tongan women collectives in NZ and Tonga to raise awareness and increase collaboration and information sharing by and for Tongan women worldwide.
We will take two approaches:
- Event: Host an annual workshop conference event in Auckland for Tongan women to share research, expertise, insights, and evidence.
- Community-based: Conduct ongoing community engagement sessions with 7 Auckland-based Tongan women's Ngatu exchange or Indigenous Ngatu-making groups from February to September 2023 (depending on funding availability).
Anticipated Outcomes
We plan to use our learnings to test innovative technology solutions that will strengthen and empower Tongan women's Ngatu collectives to have authority and ownership of Ngatu Koloa/ Taonga, systems, and knowledge.
