Tauiwi Tautoko Refresher Series Feb-March 2024

The present political climate is emboldening racists and reactionaries, who are moving quickly to enact policies that undo recent steps towards a Te Tiriti future, reinforcing Pākehā dominance, and bringing harm on multiple fronts to tangata whenua.

But it’s also galvanising thousands of tauiwi who love and seek to honour Te Tiriti. We can feel it in our own community – a call to action and, for some, a return to this practice and community as one clear, supported, effective form of action we as tauiwi can take.

Tauiwi Tautoko is offering a one-time refresher series, tailored for this moment and this community.

If you:
  • did the Tauiwi Tautoko training a while ago and would like to dust off your skills,
  • didn’t finish the full training and want to re-engage,
did a 1-day workshop with us and want a little more training so you can take up the Tauiwi Tautoko practice on or offline, and/or
  • are familiar with the practice, but want to connect with community and apply our approach to countering current National/ACT/NZ First narratives and policies

This is for you! Whether you’re a seasoned regular or haven’t been in touch since a years-ago training, you are most welcome to be part of this. This is all about energising and supporting the broader Tauiwi Tautoko community so we can feel more connected and be more active for this time ahead.
Please note this is not for those who have not yet trained with Tauiwi Tautoko; our core trainings for new participants will run next year as well.

Over four Wednesday evenings (7-8:30pm) starting 21st February 2024 on Zoom, you’re warmly invited to join the broader Tauiwi Tautoko community to practise and learn together, applying our approach to tackle some of the strongest anti-Māori myths that are circulating and bolstering current government policies at this time.

We’ll have a chance to review key aspects of the Tauiwi Tautoko approach, beef up our collective knowledge to counter powerful anti-Māori narratives, and benefit from the power and support that comes from learning and working in community in these challenging times. Like our core 8-wk training, this will mean a 4hr/week commitment (for weekly resources and workbook activities, weekly 1.5hr online hui, and at least 1hr/wk of online anti-racist practice).

If you are keen but the timing doesn’t work this time, please let us know, as we’re also considering a potential second refresher series later in the year.

Sessions are:
  1. Wed 21 Feb: 'One people, one country, one law for all', with focus on 'listening for what's behind' (dimensions 1 + 2)
  2. Wed 28 Feb: 'Special privilege', with focus on stories of experience (dimension 3)
  3. Wed 6 March: 'One person one vote', with focus on values and vision (dimension 4)
  4. Wed 13 March: TBD, with focus on causal stories (dimension 5)

If you are interested, please fill out this survey to let us know, and to give us a bit of background please complete this form so we know who is coming and can shape our sessions to this. Once completed, we'll send out information with times, Zoom link, 4-week plan, and anything to read over in advance.

Please get in touch with any questions you may have, at any time leading up to the series.

This refresher series, like our 8-week core training, are offered for free, and we fund these through grants and donations. This time we're encouraging participants of this refresher series who can to koha forward to support a new participant in our next 8-week training (roughly $350 per participant). Any amount is greatly appreciated, and is not required to participate in the refresher series. Donation link is here: https://opencollective.com/tauiwi-tautoko#category-CONTRIBUTE
