Dotted Mag Local Football Talent Exhibition Proposal

Overview
Dotted Mag is a progressive football media platform that explores alternative perspectives on the game, blending football culture, fashion, history, and storytelling. We are planning a one-day Exhibition Showcase in Barking & Dagenham, highlighting local football talent and their stories through creative media including photography, film, and interactive displays. This initiative aligns with our mission to move beyond mainstream sports journalism by elevating underrepresented voices and celebrating the cultural impact of football in local communities.
We are requesting £800 in funding to support the costs of this exhibition, which includes venue hire, creative contributor fees, and essential materials. This initiative will directly benefit the local community by showcasing grassroots football talent and creating meaningful connections between local players, fans, and the wider football culture.
Football has long been a unifying force—a common language that transcends age, background, and interests. Even for those who may not typically engage with sport, football culture offers an entry point through its music, fashion, storytelling, and sense of belonging. By using creative media to tell the stories behind the game, this exhibition will provide an inclusive space where community members can connect through shared experiences and discover the richness of local talent. It will engage people from all walks of life, strengthening community pride and participation through the cultural lens of football.

Alignment with the Legacy Asset Fund's Values
Accessible Participation Opportunities

The Exhibition Showcase will provide accessible participation for local football talents regardless of their background, offering them a unique platform to share their stories and experiences. This project has been developed in close collaboration with creatives and footballers from Barking & Dagenham, who have contributed to the production of photography, film, and other creative assets that form the foundation of the exhibition. By involving local talent in both the storytelling and production process, we not only amplify their voices but also invest in their creative and professional growth. By providing this opportunity at no cost to participants and keeping entry free for visitors, we ensure inclusivity and equity in accessing football culture beyond the mainstream narrative.

Strengthening Community Connections

The event will foster relationships between players, fans, local photographers, filmmakers, and football organisations, creating a community of shared passion and appreciation for the game's cultural significance. Importantly, it will also invite participation from those who may not usually engage with football—whether through sport or media—by offering diverse entry points into the culture through art, storytelling, and community interaction. This inclusive approach allows new audiences to connect with the spirit of the game and the people who shape it locally.
The Exhibition Showcase will further strengthen Dotted Mag’s collaboration with local football clubs and community organisations, deepening our ties to the area and contributing to a stronger, interconnected creative and sporting network within Barking & Dagenham. These collaborations are central to Dottedline’s broader vision of helping to establish Barking & Dagenham as the future football hub of London—a space where talent, culture, and community come together to redefine what football means today.

Upskilling and Development

The exhibition will not only showcase local talent but will also include workshops on storytelling, photography, and media creation. These sessions will provide valuable skills and guidance, empowering participants to document and share their own football narratives and experiences.
