Overview

Dottedline is the educational and community engagement platform. We are planning a three one-day Football x Data Learning workshop in Barking & Dagenham that introduces young people to the full process of working with data—beginning with collecting football-related data on the pitch, and progressing through cleaning, interpreting, and visualising this data using modern digital tools.

We are requesting £800 in funding to support the delivery of this session, which includes equipment (two cameras, tripod), pitch hire, facilitator fees, venue hire, and workshop materials. This initiative will directly benefit Barking & Dagenham residents by providing access to foundational data skills—made engaging and relatable through the lens of football.

Football has long been a universal language that connects people across age, background, and experience. By linking football with digital learning, we create an entry point for individuals who might not otherwise explore data, coding, or analytics. This session will allow participants to grasp the meaning of data in everyday life, while building skills that support creativity, confidence, and future employment. The Football x Data program will make learning interactive, accessible, and community-powered.

Alignment with the Legacy Asset Fund’s Values

Accessible Participation Opportunities

The Football x Data Learning workshop is designed with accessibility and inclusion at its core. Open to all Barking & Dagenham young people, regardless of prior experience, the session invites people to learn by doing—beginning with observing football activity and using that real-world action to collect data via cameras.

Participants will then be supported in organising, cleaning, and transforming this data, before producing simple visualisations and insights. We provide all tools and materials necessary, ensuring no financial or technical barrier stands in the way of participation. The goal is to build comfort and curiosity around data—especially among individuals from creative or non-technical backgrounds.

By providing this opportunity at no cost to participants and keeping the tone of the session culturally relevant and practical, we offer a clear, inclusive pathway into tech and digital understanding.

Strengthening Community Connections

This project is more than a workshop—it’s a collaboration rooted in football culture. By starting the day with a live pitch session for data collection, the program invites residents to come together around a shared passion. From there, the group transitions into a hands-on workshop where they explore how that football activity translates into usable data.

In doing so, we connect players, tech-curious youth, community educators, and creatives in one unified experience. This allows football culture to serve as a bridge to deeper learning, media fluency, and data literacy. Participants will engage with each other, share interpretations, and leave with skills that are both useful and empowering.

The program also builds stronger ties between Dottedline, local sports organisations, and community groups—strengthening Barking & Dagenham’s identity as a place where culture, education, and sport come together to shape the future.

Upskilling and Development

Participants will be guided through the key stages of the data lifecycle:

  • Ideation – Understanding what data is, and how it applies to football
  • Collection – Capturing meaningful football data using digital cameras
  • Cleaning and Organising – Sorting data into usable formats
  • Transformation and Visualisation – Turning data into charts or visuals
  • Interpretation – Understanding what the data tells us, and why it matters

By combining a playful, physical starting point (football) with structured, creative analysis, we empower residents to see data as something they can understand, use, and apply. Whether participants are future analysts, artists, community storytellers or simply curious locals, the session offers transferable skills that will serve them well.
