Conservation, Art and Totem Workshops
Fiscal Host: All For Climate
Youth engagement through creative arts, storytelling and culture to inspire conservation
About
The Rwenzori Founders bronze sculpture foundry has provided employment for local people. They have created a series of animal totems among other artworks. Across Uganda, families belong to clans represented by totems that may be cultural objects, plants or animals. These are symbols of identity, ancestry and protection. You cannot kill or eat your totem animal. Such traditions make clan totems one of their oldest forms of conservation.
Our workshops, (which take place after screenings of our film) offer the chance for local people to create their own totems, to help them re-connect, with support while sharing stories. Understanding such associations, and an animal's ecology can re-awaken desires to protect a totem or learn more about conservation. We offer this activity to schools but also tailor conservation workshops for adults in specific communities for example with reformed poachers seeking alternative life skills.
