Projects
Support the following initiatives from Umeå Kallbad.
Umeå Kallbad is an initiative aimed at creating a floating bath and sauna facility on the Ume River in central Umeå. A facility offering various sauna experiences and opportunities for ice and cold bathing. Using reclaimed materials and creative methods, we want to build a beautiful and unique facility rooted in the Nordic sauna tradition. Open year-round, for the people of Umeå.
Background
It all started when Sebastian Ulonska Viklands, co-owner of the restaurant Båten, built a large floating platform on the water. The platform was constructed from reclaimed materials, reached a size of 250 square meters, and could support a load of 75 tons. His initial idea was to build a floating house on the river, but with his experience running a restaurant on the water, the dream of a bath and sauna facility gradually took shape.
Building Bifrost
Other projects took priority, and the initiative was put on hold for almost seven years. It wasn’t until Sebastian met architect and social entrepreneur, Kasimir Suter Winter that the project was revived. Kasimir invited him to Umeå Municipality’s new social innovation project, Umeå Together, which supports residents to take initiative and start projects that develop Umeå into a more vibrant and sustainable place. This includes a community funding model, using this platform Open Collective for crowdfunding and building a community around each initiative.
As the project gained momentum, Ludvig Dovberg, Elin Holmberg, Jon Krebs, Dan Allen and Elvira Lundgren joined, along with many volunteers and community members. A name was chosen—Umeå Kallbad—the design process began, and the vision started to take shape.
Our Vision
Our first goal was to crowdfund and launch a mobile sauna on land. In February 2025, we completed the sauna and launched it on Bölesholmerna where it happily lives today. Hosting guests all week long, and warming up ice bathers each Sunday at our weekly Söndagsdopp meetups.
The sauna was built from an old fika wagen for job sites, and we used many different recycled materials, including cut up pallets for the exterior shingles. It was all made possible thanks to over 100 contributors who helped us crowdfund the costs. And over 1000 hours of volunteer time from our amazing community who helped build the sauna on weekends and after work.
Building the mobile sauna
Our goal is to create a year-round experience and become part of Umeå’s community life, offering residents and visitors a unique way to experience the city’s natural beauty, relax and reconnect with nature and community!
Söndagsdopp
Our community really blossomed when Dan and Elvira launched our weekly Söndagsdopp community meetups. From the start it was about providing a welcoming and safe community space for ice bathing in Umeå. Today we welcome roughly 100 bathers each Sunday from 10-12, and the air is filled with chatter and laughter throughout the morning. So if you have not yet, come along and join us. Bring a friend and start your week refreshed and energized from a cold bath!
Today, we lead increasingly stressful lives, distancing us from healthy and meaningful connections with nature, ourselves, and each other. We want to create a place where people can reconnect with nature and its elements—a place to relax and recharge, promoting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. At the same time, we aim to foster a sense of community and connection—a space where people can meet, share experiences, and build meaningful relationships, ultimately leading to a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle.

Next steps
We have achieved so much already, and what an amazing experience it has been. We could not have done it without all the countless hours of volunteer time and support from our amazing team and community. Thank you for being part of Umeå Kallbad!
Our next goal is to launch Bifrost along with more saunas and bathing opportunities in the Ume älv. Stay tuned for more information on that coming soon. Until then, try out our sauna and consider becoming a member to support us.
