Inspiring documentaries, short films by local filmmakers, (mostly) organic vegan curries, hot and cold drinks.

An exciting new fortnightly event for Bridport in the lovely White Room at the Chapel in the Garden (entry via Rax Lane)

This week we're screening:

Shorts from around 6:30

And then the main feature films from around 7pm:

Films about the Community owned Isle of Eigg (total 1hr 10 mins ) 2010 - 2023

In 1997 the residents of Eigg raised £1.5 million and did a community buy-out of their island. In 2008 they opened the world's first micro-grid that connects hydro, solar and wind, creating the first reliable 24 hour power supply on the island. We'll watch half a dozen short films about this inspirational community.

Get your tickets and pre-book your food now 🎟️ 🍲😋

We'll have delicious food (a mostly organic vegan curry) from 6ish:

Nepali Vegetable Curry (potato, cauliflower, peas, squash, tomato)
Masoor Dal
Courgette Bharta
Basmati rice
Indian salads

Isle of Eigg, energy efficiency and renewable energy - Ashden Award winner (5 mins) 2010

The Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2010.

If you don't think you can really reduce your energy consumption, then go and talk to the Islanders of Eigg. By carefully managing their energy use, actively encouraging energy-saving in everyone's daily life and generating 90% of electricity through renewable energy, the Islanders have cut their carbon by nearly 50%. As the Chair of the Island's Green Team says, "in a community-led scheme like ours, people have more responsibility to save energy, but if it's led by the government, people just leave it to the authorities."

earthrise - The Isle of Eigg (6 mins) 2011

The remote Scottish island of Eigg is one of the first energy self-sufficient communities in the world.

earthrise meets the energy-conscious islanders and discovers that a sense of community is key to the scheme's success.

A Common Right: Scotland (7 mins) 2016

Sarah Boden decided it was time to swap her busy London life as a music journalist in order to reconnect to the land and community life on the Scottish Isle of Eigg.

Thanks to the community's buy-out of the Island in 1997, it was all made possible. This is a story of a community who have fought and won their rights to their future.

This film was part of the Global Call to Action Campaign, aimed at doubling the global area of land legally recognized as owned or controlled by Indigenous Peoples and local communities by 2020.

The Isle of Eigg (13 mins) 2017

Just off Scotland, a tiny island with one main road is a testament to human independence.

SLOW LIFE on Island (7 mins) 2019

Eigg is a small island off the coast of Scotland, populated mostly by sheep, the dogs that keep track of them, and the 109 local residents.

You wouldn't think that such a small island would have need for a taxi service, but you'll be surprised! Charlie is the only taxi on the island. He moved here looking to find a slower way of life, and a community who place greater value on relationships and conversation than they do on their mobile phones.

"Sometimes I think there's too much technology involved in life. It's not real - you're not meeting people, you're not grabbing their hand and shaking it. We're losing that power - the art of conversation." - Charlie Galli

The Isle of Eigg | ARTE.tv Documentary (32 mins) 2023

12 June is a very important date for the small Scottish island of Eigg.

On this day in 1997, the islanders purchased their home from their landlord and took control of their destiny. More than 25 years later, how have the local people managed the community owned Eigg?

We'll also have:

Delicious (mostly) organic vegan curries from Fergus Bradbeer aka Vegie Vortex (who also does the curries at Beach and Barnicott), plus hot and cold drinks.

Please note:

Our room hire costs £42/ week so if you're able to able to contribute more than the default ticket amount then please do so.

We also need to ensure enough people come along to make it worthwhile for Fergus to keep coming along to cook up the delicious food - so invite a friend!

Many thanks in advance. Together We Have Everything.
