Yala for Sudan is a community-led initiative rooted in the values of cultural awareness, education, and empowerment. The word Yala in Arabic means "let’s go" or "stand up," reflecting our mission to stand up for Sudan during its time of crisis. Through our events and engagement, we quickly recognised the healing power of connecting with roots and culture—not only for ourselves but for our wider community and for others who see the transformative power of art, culture, poetry, and shared experiences. Our kaupapa is to raise awareness about the ongoing challenges in Sudan while celebrating and showcasing Sudanese culture here in Aotearoa. Through cultural exhibitions, workshops, and educational drives, we aim to build bridges between communities, fostering understanding, solidarity, and empowerment.
Who is involved? Yala for Sudan is led by a dedicated team of New Zealanders with Sudanese roots, united by a deep love for their culture and a shared commitment to make a difference. We work hand in hand with volunteers, cultural groups, and community organisations, creating a network of people who are passionate about amplifying Sudanese voices and fostering connections.
What’s the background story? Yala for Sudan was born from the heartfelt need to stand up for Sudan during its time of crisis. What began as small gatherings among friends grew into a movement that brings people together through shared stories, cultural celebration, and advocacy. Inspired by the strength and resilience of Sudanese people, we aim to connect hearts, spark conversations, and build bridges of understanding through everything we do.
