About

Aqil Remembrance is a grassroots charity organisation, which was set up by the family and friends of Hafidh Muhammad Aqil Mahdi.

22-year-old Hafidh Aqil suffered a tragic death after being stabbed multiple times on 6th November 2021. We grieve every day, as it’s not a temporary heartbreak that we can heal from, or overcome.

Death and loss are the great unfixable things: They must simply be endured. Grateful for our religion and the legacy Aqil has left behind and taken to his grave with, we find comfort in the words of the Quran he wholeheartedly read and taught and the many memories he left us to hold onto and celebrate.

Since his death, we have held several events, during the last two years. We hosted a charity event last year too, during which we took the opportunity to collaborate with Knife crime campaigns, artists and the National Huffadh Association UK with Imam Is'Haaq Jasat to hold a Quran competition, calligraphy stall & deliver presentations to raise awareness of the rising knife crimes among the youth as well as, educate the parents and adults on how to prevent such issues through prioritising communication, education and supporting ambitions and received great feedback, there is an overwhelming demand for another this year.

All money raised on the day has been going towards the mosque being constructed in Egypt, which will be part of Jamal Abu Al-Majid Al-Azhari School, a branch of Al-Azhar University. We are also launching an orphanage project in Kenya, which this year's event will focus on as we set up our team there this Summer.

This mission was inspired following an eye-opening trip to Kenya, Mombasa, where we had the opportunity to visit the Al-Walidayn Centre, a family-run organisation that has established itself in the local community in Kinondo, Kwale County.

Established in June 2016, it has successfully grown and continues to benefit the local community by building and maintaining facilities such as a Rescue Centre, School, Hospital, and mosque. It aims to empower the people by providing services such as great healthcare and first-rate education, and it aims to do this at completely no cost to the community.

As a memory to our Aqil, we are aiming, with your help, to contribute to Al-Walidayn's initiative and build a secondary school for the community.

Please do let us know if you require any further information about Aqil’s charity events; you can also directly contact us at [email protected].
