Our Beloved Elders (OBE)

PROJECT

Using Storytelling to Combat Loneliness and Isolation.

About

We invite older people to come together and share their stories, providing a platform for diverse voices. We particularly aim to encourage elders of Caribbean and African heritage, who share deep cultural and historical values, to join in a supportive and safe environment where they can experience a strong sense of belonging.

OBE Storytelling, at Camden Black British History Community Hub.

By using storytelling as a tool, we provide a space for these elders to share their personal stories, cultural traditions, and lived experiences. This process not only fosters connection and understanding but also helps combat loneliness and isolation, allowing participants to form meaningful bonds with others who share similar backgrounds and experiences. Additionally, this project offers an opportunity for stories to be recorded, feeding directly into our Hidden Voices Project, preserving these important narratives for future generations. Through the power of storytelling, we create a space where their voices are heard, their histories are celebrated, and a sense of community is nurtured, ultimately promoting mental well-being and emotional support for those who may otherwise feel disconnected.

To celebrate our Windrush elders, who have significantly contributed to Camden’s social and fiscal fabric, we host an annual outdoor tea party inJune as part of Camden's Windrush Celebration events. Looking ahead to 2025, we are excited to introduce a weekly OBE Coffee Morning as a dedicated space for ongoing connection, conversation, and community building.
