About

The MHC NorCal Club invites you to usher in the Year of the Wood Snake by honoring your intuition and creativity. Join us to engage your artistic side and experience watercolors in a casual, beginner-friendly environment with fellow alums. Come with an appetite to be present in art-making and be inspired to start an auspicious new lunar year. Adrianne W. ’21 has curated a selection of supplies from Jetpens, a women-owned small business based in San Jose, to help you get started on (or continue) your watercolor journey.

Arrive at the home of Katie W. ’05 in Oakland (address provided upon RSVP) at 4:00 PM on Saturday, February 1. After introductions, we’ll select our supplies and watch a few videos to get acquainted with water brush and watercolor techniques. Then it’s time to paint, using illustrations printed on artist-quality paper from Pepin Artist's Coloring Book! We will wrap up our masterpieces at 6:00 PM.

📍 Location notes: This is a cat-friendly home, but they can be closed up in bedrooms.
🚌 Nearby bus lines: 1T, 54, 40, 20, 21, 39, 51A, 19, 62, 0, 14
🚈 Train: Fruitvale BART station (10-12 min walk)
🚗 Carpool: Contact us for potential options — currently: 1 car heading up from South Bay @ 3 PM.
🅿️ Parking: Space for 3 (maybe 4) cars in driveway. Street parking is tough in this area. Can also park at Fruitvale BART parking garage and walk over.
Accessibility: Attendees will need to go up 10 stairs.

Pre-Registration Considerations

To ensure that everything goes smoothly and there aren't any miscommunications, we expect all registrants to have read and agreed to the following:

  • This event is for Mount Holyoke alums only. Please include your name when you register so we can confirm your alum status. Your registration will be cancelled if you don’t include your name! If you'd like to remain publicly anonymous and you're paying with a credit card, you can fill out the “Legal Name” field only.
    • If you're paying with a debit card, please fill out the “Your name” field so we can find you in the Alum Directory. (We may contact you through the directory while your payment is processing.) Keep in mind that your name will be publicly visible.
  • All necessary materials will be provided.
  • No prior experience is needed, but if you have previously worked with watercolors, you're also welcome to join. Training videos will help us get started, but there won't be formal instruction.
  • We're unable to accommodate refunds for this event, as event supplies need to be purchased in advance. Instead, consider "donating" your unused ticket if you can't make it, and we can offer your spot to other alums. We cannot guarantee any last-minute openings.
  • The event address will be provided upon registration. Make sure you've located it in your ticket confirmation email from [email protected], from which additional event updates will also be sent. Attendees are responsible for providing an email to which they'll have regular access when they register.
  • If you have any questions, please check the event description (above) as well as the Club’s event FAQ (linked) before reaching out! If your query is answered in one of those places, you are unlikely to receive a response, as the Club is an all-volunteer organization with limited capacity. Thank you for your understanding.

Alum Spotlight

Longtime Board member Eleanor Chang ’78 has been hard at work with the Alum Association, and NorCal alums are getting a special opportunity to participate early in the inaugural Red Envelope Challenge! For every alum or student who shares a message on the Lunar New Year celebration Kudoboard by February 12, a generous anonymous alum will give $8 (a symbolic red envelope) towards international student scholarship aid via The Mount Holyoke Fund. The 188th person to post will unlock a final jackpot to make the total gift $1,888, an auspicious number. Visit the Kudoboard to learn more about Lunar New Year and share a greeting now to contribute to this amazing effort.
