About
The Community Councillor Collective was initiated by Fiona Barrows, a town councillor in Frome, Somerset. As a councillor, she leads on the climate and ecological emergency work programme, and is a consistent advocate for inclusivity and participation in decision-making.
Fiona is part of Independents for Frome, a group that formed in 2011 to take party politics out of local politics, and has led the town council ever since. As Peter Macfadyen, one of the initiators, said:
“We were a bunch of people who'd never done it before, we got into power and we questioned all the rules, took most of them to pieces, and did things very differently.”
The Community Councillor Collective builds on the work Peter subsequently did through Flatpack Democracy, but centres participation over independence, and is for councillors at all levels of government and all parties as well as none. It is just getting started and we are looking for councillors to help to shape it. It is run by councillors ourselves, and will evolve as we evolve.
The Community Councillor Collective was incubated by The Iswe Foundation. It is hosted by The Social Change Nest on Open Collective, and supported by Involve and the Democracy Network, among other organisations.
