In 2021, Denver Doikayt formed around the Jewish Shmita year ("Year of Release" or "Sabbath of the Land"). The yiddish word Doikayt, or “hereness,” was popularized by the Jewish Labor Bund in the early 20th century as a contrast to the “thereness” of Zionism, which claims Israel as the one true Promised Land. Then and now, “Doikayt” is a call for people of the Jewish diaspora to treat wherever they are as the Promised Land, striving to be in right relationship with the people and species that live there.
