About

Freedom to Learn is a cooperative network of educators, learners, and community organisers building more just, joyful, and sustainable futures through learning ecosystems.

Together, we aim to:
  • Support the growth of a diverse, equitable, and just education system
  • Cultivate agency, imagination, and joy in young people
  • Nurture cultures of reciprocity, care, and solidarity
  • Strengthen relationships between communities and their youth
  • Contribute to more connected, resilient, and hopeful communities

We’re creating and supporting learning ecosystems rooted in social and environmental justice, grounded in local communities, and shaped by the people they serve. Until recently, we were part of a registered charity but to better reflect our values, we’re now becoming an independent, cooperative organisation, currently in the process of registering as a Community Benefit Society (CBS)

This shift marks more than just a change in structure. We’re moving away from the charity model toward a cooperative one that embraces shared ownership, democratic governance, and diverse, community-powered funding; including donations, partnerships, and reciprocal contributions.

Our flagship event is the Freedom to Learn Forum: a collaborative space for educators, families, young people and organisers to come together, share practice, build tools, play and challenge the status quo in education. The Forum operates as a commons; designed collectively, governed horizontally, and resourced by the people involved.

We are currently building out our cooperative governance and invite you to support us during this next phase. Here’s how you can get involved:
