Over 15,000 pounds diverted from landfills!
Published on May 4, 2022 by Brett

Milestones
We will hit our one year anniversary at the end of next month, so we wanted to take a little time to reflect on some milestones we recently hit! As of right now, we have diverted a total of 16481 pounds of fresh food from entering a landfill! That equals out to a total of 1368 pounds of methane prevented from entering our atmosphere. That amount of food waste could also provide electricity for one household for 7.66 years!

Composting
Occasionally we receive some fruits and veggies that are not suitable for consumption. Instead of tossing these items in the trash, we compost them! Our compost is then given to one of our unhoused community members who uses the compost in their thriving garden. They will be providing seedlings at LA Neighbors for Neighbors resource center this month for people to take home too! If you're not familiar with LA Neighbors for Neighbors, they are an organization that hosts a monthly resource center for unhoused folks in West LA. Many of grocery recipients and volunteers take part in the resource center as well! We provide outreach for the resource center as a part of our regular grocery distribution!

Our First Community Day
Last month we co-hosted our first Community Day with Street Watch LA and Palms Unhoused Mutual Aid. We shared ideas on how to make our community stronger, ways to get involved in all the organizations present...and of course, pizza! We also built and painted hand wash stations for nearby encampments following the model created by our friends LACAN.

GoFundMe
One of our unhoused friends recently got into a Project Roomkey, but it's critical to remember that simply getting inside of a hotel room does not exclusively remove all the hurdles that people in poverty face. She needs cash assistance to help pay for medical supplies for a breathing condition, groceries, her phone bill, and storage space. She has created a gofundme, and we would really love your support in collecting funds for her.

Thank you all for your continued support! We appreciate you!
