GoZen is a video editor

GoZen, a video editor with as main target audience being Linux users and more specifically content creators who use Linux. Our editor has as focus to be build with a clean UI so that both beginners and more advanced users can get the hang of how everything works rather quickly, but with the possibility to easily extend the editor to fit their needs with modules.

Although our main focus is Linux users, there will be cross platform support with Windows (and maybe MacOS). An Android port may come, but no promises on that.

The problem

Linux users don't really have the luxury of being able to choose between many different video editors, with most of the options which do exist being buggy, outdated, not working properly when not using their desktop environment, or difficult to modify to fit the users need. There is a closed source alternative which is quite popular, but which has limited hardware + codec support which makes using it for most people not really a possibility.

The solution

The solution is GoZen, a modular video which is made with FFmpeg and Godot. Due to the UI and functionality being made in Godot, it's very easy for anyone and their cat to create modules or to create their own custom version of the video editor to fit their needs. Make your own modules, effects, plugins, transitions, layout, ... all in an easy way and giving full freedom to users to create and adjust their own workflow which fits their needs.

Some strong points

  • Build with Godot: GoZen leverages the flexibility and power of the Godot engine, allowing a ton of features to be possible such as 3D support, shaders, and easy UI creation to name a few;
  • Modular design: Don't like something about the editor, change it;
  • Community: GoZen is made with the community in mind, giving users the power to influence which features and bugs get attention first;
  • Linux focus: Too long have the better video editors been Windows only and have the Linux users been left with buggy, outdated, and/or limited options. GoZen is made with Linux as first priority;
  • FFmpeg: By utilizing FFmpeg directly, and not through a framework, we can improve and control the performance a lot more and don't have to rely on other frameworks to fix long standing bugs and issues;

Why free and open source?

I admit that being free and open source is not the best business plan since I've been trying to do this as a kind of full time job for the past 2 years, but I've always been more interested in helping and teaching people. I believe that keeping GoZen open source can help people learn more about video editors as the code isn't too difficult and complicated due to using Godot as the underlying framework. Video editors are complex and there are a lot of moving parts, sadly there is barely any information on how they work and that's something I'm trying to change by making GoZen and creating video's to talk about the process of building a video editor.

Being open source makes it possible for people to choose which features get added to the core or which bugs get fixed first, both by contributing directly and through correcting me in my devlogs. Unlike closed-source tools, where people have to beg and rely on a company to hopefully fix an issue one day or add a much-needed feature at some point. No, GoZen wants to give full control to the people without any strings attached.

Why is funding needed?

To keep GoZen growing and to bring GoZen to its full potential, financial support is needed. With the support I can dedicate more time purely and the development without too many worries. Whilst asking for funding is something which I find difficult, I came to the point that I need to do this more actively to increase the progress of making GoZen a reality.

Funding isn't only going to cover my time investment and increase progress, it will also be used for hardware upgrades to test more different configurations, get help from people with more extensive knowledge on FFmpeg/C++, and to be able to provide better overall support for the video editor.

GoZen is not just another video editor to me. For me personally I see a lot of possibilities for GoZen such as:
  • it will be the video editor that empowers creators;
  • enhance Linux adaptation;
  • show once again what a dream and dedication of one person can achieve.
