About
The Green Screen Climate Justice and Digital Rights Funders Coalition
We are a group of funders and practitioners looking to build bridges across the digital rights and climate justice movements. The coalition consists of Ariadne, Ford Foundation, Internet Society Foundation, Mozilla Foundation, Green Web Foundation, and Stiftung Mercator. Our collaboration began in 2020 as shared concerns about the escalating ecological and human rights impacts of the internet and digital technologies. Together we began to humbly explore what we digital rights funders needed to know about climate justice and how we might most effectively integrate these issues into our work. We are not subject matter experts but rather conveners, community builders, and staff members who seek to catalyze a nascent field, inform our organizations’ policies, and engage in funder education to better serve the needs of the people and ecosystems most impacted.
Scope of work
This coalition sees itself as conveners and community builders who seek to catalyze emerging work, thinking and networks on the nexus of climate justice and digital rights. We use the terms climate justice and digital rights in a broad and holistic sense.
By climate justice we mean actors and activities that center communities most impacted by the climate crisis, pollution, environmental mismanagement, and harmful industry practices in their work to create an equitable and sustainable world. They advocate for environmental and climate change solutions that benefit those most impacted and result in better outcomes for them.

By digital rights we mean actors and activities that focus on ‘digital technologies’ in their work to create an equitable and sustainable world. This ranges from, but is not limited to, advocacy and campaigning on data protection and AI legislation, influencing debates and institutions that govern the internet to include human rights principles in their operations, researching and raising awareness on data harms, developing public interest technology, and supporting activists and human rights defenders with their digital security challenges.
We do not seek to replace or interrupt existing strategies within climate justice portfolios, nor do we intend to collapse all existing digital rights work under the climate silo. With a small grants mechanism and an eye towards network building through convening and research, we hope to support this burgeoning community building trust and connection that will extend and move across spaces (internet governance, policy, platform accountability, advocacy and campaigning).
