About

Open-source tools for creating, sharing and preserving 3D and immersive art. Home of Open Brush, Open Blocks and Icosa Gallery, with preservation and interoperability projects including IMM.

Icosa Foundation develops and maintains free, open-source tools for creating, sharing and preserving 3D content.

We maintain Open Brush, a community-led evolution of Tilt Brush; Open Blocks, our evolution of Google Blocks; and Icosa Gallery, an open platform for publishing, discovering and preserving 3D work. We also restore and extend the open-source IMM format and player used for Quill immersive animation, helping keep important immersive works playable and the underlying technology available to new tools.

Icosa began when Google announced the closure of Poly. What started as an effort to preserve an important creative community has grown into an interconnected ecosystem spanning XR creation tools, self-hostable 3D publishing, reusable viewers and importers, open APIs, engine integrations and preservation work for immersive media.

Our projects are community-led, free to use and built to keep creative work accessible long after individual products and platforms disappear.

Funding

Icosa's projects are free and open source. Financial contributions help us pay for the things that volunteer time alone can't cover: hosting and storage for Icosa Gallery, software and store fees, development work, bug bounties, infrastructure and other project costs.

Funding lets us maintain existing software as well as invest in new features, integrations and accessibility across the Icosa ecosystem.

External grant funding has also supported specific development, including work funded through NLnet's NGI0 Entrust and NGI0 Commons programmes.

What we're working on

Open Brush
Continue evolving Open Brush as a modern, extensible XR creation tool, including new creative workflows, improved interoperability, scripting and plugins, and support for current XR hardware.

Open Blocks
Build Open Blocks into a modern, accessible 3D modelling tool while retaining the simplicity that made the original Blocks unique.

Icosa Gallery
Develop an open, self-hostable and interoperable home for 3D content, with better publishing, discovery and preservation, plus reusable APIs, viewers, importers and integrations across Open Brush, Open Blocks, the web, Unity, Blender, Godot and other platforms.

IMM / Quill Player
Restore, preserve and extend the open-source IMM runtime and player used for Quill immersive animation. This includes keeping reproducible builds of disappearing dependencies, modernising playback on current systems and expanding engine and XR support through Unity, Godot and other platforms.

The wider ecosystem
Treat interoperability as a project in its own right: make it easy for assets and immersive works to move between Icosa Gallery, our creation tools, game engines and the web, using open formats, reusable components and APIs rather than locking work to a single application or service.
