About
Over the years of coaching, working, and talking with folks, I've tried to summarize specific ideas to impact clients and inspire change within them. This book captures many of them, their reasonings, and their origin stories.
Throwing Copper
I was a contractor on a program with the United States Department of Defense. The folks on this program lived and died by email. Occasionally, one of the contractors would send an email with a hot-take, speaking truth to power in what could be interpreted as a confrontational tone. But they would always end by saying, “That’s just my two cents.”
It was self-effacing, self-deprecating, and said, “Please don’t hurt me.” It could also devalue what they had said because it was only worth two cents.
I started ending similar emails with, “Just throwing copper.”
The value of copper fluctuates. Copper also has a lot of utility in industrial applications. Electrical wiring, plumbing, and many other areas. Houses that appear abandoned, or even those with people still living in them, may have their air conditioning units and plumbing ripped out by thieves wanting to acquire the copper.
If a penny (one cent) made entirely of copper were melted down and sold, it would be worth more than a penny. That’s why modern pennies are zinc discs wrapped in copper. Melting it down is worth less than a penny.
Phrasing the sentiment as “Throwing copper” leaves the valuation to the consumer instead of the creator marking the value at two cents.
This book is a collection of sayings and phrases that are just me throwing copper.
