About
Summer is peach season—time for juicy, sweet peaches perfect for cobblers, pies, or just enjoying fresh off the tree! NorCal board members Eleanor and I invite you to join us for a special day of picking peaches at Wolfe Ranch in Brentwood, CA on Saturday, July 26. Depending on availability, we may pick Suncrest or Elberta peaches—both beloved for their rich flavor and vibrant color. Please note that the event date is subject to change depending on whether the “You Pick” at Wolfe Ranch is open.
This is a wonderful opportunity to experience firsthand the juicy, flavorful fruit that inspired David Masumoto’s Epitaph for a Peach. This lyrical memoir tells the story of Masumoto’s dedication to preserving the Suncrest peach—a richly sweet, old-fashioned variety prized for its taste but fragile and prone to bruising during transport, making it rare in commercial markets.
Picking these peaches yourself connects you to the same deep bond between food, land, and tradition that Masumoto so beautifully describes. In his words:
“Along with these perished our window into a world where hard work was honestly rewarding, a labor that truly produced life and gave it a flavor.”
We hope this outing offers you a chance to savor not just delicious peaches, but also the rich heritage they represent. We’d love for you to join us for this fun, sun-filled outing and take home some of the most flavorful peaches you won’t find in a supermarket.
