TUSOME PAMOJA INITIATIVE NVC TRAINING HELD ON 25TH – 29TH NOVEMBER AT LOKWI PRIMARY SCHOOL – TURKANA BY STEVE MAINA
Published on December 5, 2024 by Stephen Maina Njenga

Introduction
The training happened from the 25th November to 29th November. This was the 3rd training that was happening in Turkan East. The training took place at Lokwi Primary School Hall which was provided by the community.
The trainings started at 9:00 and would end at 4:00PM (This was to allow the participants to participate in the annual ball games).
The training started with a morning circle and checking in and a recap of the previous day or having a common agreement for the first days.
The training program was as follows: -
9:00AM – 10:00AM – First Session
10:00AM – 10:30AM - Break
10:30AM – 12:30PM – 2nd Session
12:30PM – 1:45PM – Lunch
1:45PM - 4:00PM - 3rd Session
The training attracted 56 participants who were divided as follows: -
1.     24 Teachers from 5 different schools – the training happened on the 25th – 26th November 2024
2.     18 Pupils from 4 different schools within Turkana East - the training happened on 27th – 28th November 2024
3.     14 Youths from the local Catholic church - the training took place on the 29th November 2024.
The training covered different topics as follows: -
-        Introduction to NVC
-        The 4 steps of NVC
-        Empathy
-        Self Empathy
-        NVC and Education
-        NVC Decision making
-        NVC Key Assumptions

Challenges
1.     The participants of the trainings had no writing materials and I felt sad because I could imagine that they would have wished to have some small notes that they would refer later.
2.     There were no manuals that we would have given the participants after the training.
3.     Two afternoons during the children training, it rained heavily and so it was difficult to go on the training until the rain reduced.
4.     The training with the children had mixed participants as 15 pupils of the participants were new and there were 8 pupils who had attended the other trainings.
5.     The teachers had an impression that they need to have been given some sitting allowances and reimbursement and this took some time in the morning hours to address it.
6.     This training coincidentally came at a time where the community normally have it’s annual ball games and thus we were finishing our training earlier to allow the participants attend the ball games.

Recommendation
1.     There is a need for provision of manuals during trainings so that the participants can use them during and after the trainings.
2.     The host of the training needs to communicate clearly to the participants they are mobilising on what the training is meant for, what can be done and or what can not be done.
3.     More teachers’ trainings are highly encouraged to take place so that most teachers can have the NVC consciousness.
4.     The end of year training to be incorporated together with the annual ball games so as to more youths get the NVC training.

Conclusion
The training with the 3 groups was generally cool, the participants were friendly, curious and open to learn. My need for support, learning, creativity, growth and connection were highly met.
The participants shared that they are happy to have learnt the new skills of NVC that will support them in their day to day lives. The teachers agreed that the training is important to all teachers as they deal with children at a tender age and they can start impacting the children with these skills.

Feedback from Participants.
1. I am happy that I choose to attend this training after a pupil shared in class how he had spent the April holiday, I was curious and when I asked more about it, he explained to me the four steps of NVC and I was motivated to learn more. I have learnt a lot and would like to attend more of these trainings. I enjoyed the introduction of the four steps and the topic on changing the narrative which i learnt there is a way you can speak to someone that can be more connecting and bring peace.
           - Moses Kalal - Teacher

2. I was happy as youth to learn about NVC, I am now aware how to stay in a peaceful way with my mother, my sisters and my boyfriend. I have not been guessing what are my unmet needs or the other person when we are in conflict.
This is was a very important training.
-        Jeremiah - Youth

3. I liked that I was able to learn something new on how to communicate with other classmates and the teachers, I have known that we fight because we are unable to agree on the strategy.
Yunain – Pupil

4. I have observed that the teacher was well loud enough and gave use exercises, I was happy and excited because this is different from school, my need for fun and learning met. I have a request to be attending these trainings.
-        Lunka – Pupil
5. I have realised that sometimes it is important to listen to pupils before making any judgment, as I teacher the first thing you think is to punish a pupil when you think he is in the wrong. Out of this training I go home with the awareness to listen before an action. I enjoyed the examples the trainer used especially around the education sector.
-        Mathew Luyani - Teacher
