July Update From OSC
Published on August 9, 2024 by Grace Powers

Hello, OSC community! We hope you're having an excellent August. We have our July update for you, so let's get to it!

📣 Announcements

OSC can now accept Polar payments!
If Open Source Collective hosts your project and you have a Polar account, you can now receive Polar payments directly to your OSC budget. Learn more here: https://docs.oscollective.org/campaigns-programs-and-partnerships/polas.sh

Berlin Meetup
OSC will be hosting a meet and greet event on Monday, 23 September in Berlin, and we’d love to see you there! To help us plan accordingly, please take a moment to RSVP by filling out this quick form: https://forms.gle/91XPNXHMgsNgurPN6

Collective Review
We finished our first round of the collective review process. In the first round, we identified hosted projects with 0 balance and no incoming funds or outgoing expense activity in over a year. After emailing project admins to confirm in writing if they needed the project to remain active, we unhosted it after one month of waiting for a response. In total, we unhosted over 1,300 projects.

We are moving on to the second phase of our cleanup to identify projects that might not be in compliance with our terms of fiscal hosting. Here are some of the things we will be looking at during the review:

  • Missing URLs on OC profile page to code repositories or community events
  • Lack of activity for the past 2 years (events or in repo)
  • No license on the repositories

As before, we will email any collective identifying areas for clarification. We’re happy to discuss any exceptions; however, we need to ensure the remaining projects are in compliance. We plan to conduct this review annually and hope it helps us learn more about your projects and identify ways we can better support you.

United Nations OSPO for Good Summit
Earlier in the month, we attended the OSPO for Good summit in NY. There were a lot of great talks and the full video archive is available here - https://joinup.ec.europa.eu/collection/open-source-observatory-osor/news/ospos-good-2024-highlights. One of the points that Lauren, our executive director, is still thinking about is Aviva Black’s closing in the Open Source and Governments track:

“It’s not just open source code, but it needs to be open roadmap, open process, and open community.”

Open Source Funding Survey
The Linux Foundation, GitHub, and Harvard University are partnering on research on how OSS is funded - in the hopes of getting more data on how we can improve funding in the ecosystem. If your org funds open source, you can take it here: https://www.linuxfoundation.org/research/surveys/open-source-software-funding-survey-2024
