Orcahome is a redesign of orcasound.net transitioning us from our Wordpress site
About
For about the last quarter century, the orcasound.net home page has been a Wordpress site hosted by Dreamhost (in CA) and maintained by Beam Reach. In 2018 the Orcasound community began developing open source code on Github and deploying it in a variety of ways. In the summer of 2021, Google Summer of Code student Isabelle Macchiavello (mentored by Paul Cretu, along with Brendan, Scott, and Ty) created a Next.js prototype frontend (see tech notes) for a new site in the orcahome repository.
The goal of this project is to pioneer a new site for the orcasound.net domain. Ideally, it will enable Orcasound community members, new and old, to create and manage content for Orcasound easily. At the least, this means not having to create accounts on the Wordpress site; at best they would be able to manage content as authenticated Github users, or maybe eventually just as account holders within the live.orcasound.net web app.
Phase 1 of this project, funded by Val and Leslie Veirs via Beam Reach, is a 2-week sprint with a budget of $2,000. The sprint, if successful, will provide the following deliverables by the weekly Wednesday standup on May 20, 2026:

- Make the Figma design for the site publicly-viewable and link to it in both the orcahome README and wiki
- Complete the To-Do orcahome project pages (as of the beginning of May), specifically issues 52, 169, 171, 172, 185, and 209.
- Deploy the revised prototype at a staging site, e.g. a new sub-domain like home.orcasound.net managed through AWS
- Research and propose a CMS solution for the static site (to be implemented in phase 2), e.g. TinaCMS or Decap CMS. Include a solution for migrating the Wordpress blog and portfolio content, and ideally preserving the historic URLs (permalinks).
- Research and propose a media storage solution for the static site (to be implemented in phase 2), e.g. Github repo or AWS S3.
