About:
  • We look forward to hearing from Brittany Wienke, Forests Projects Manager at The Nature Conservancy. Brittany will present on the Working Woodlands program that encourages landowners to preserve forests by providing rewards for the carbon their trees capture and store.
    • Furthermore, Brittany co-authored the Urban Silviculture guide* during her time as a Conservation Science Project Manager with the Natural Areas Conservancy. Silviculture is a holistic framework and pathway for managers to keep forests healthy and resilient, ensuring a suite of important ecosystem services for cities: From carbon capture and storage, to urban heat mitigation, removal of air pollution and particulates, to stormwater capture, habitat for biodiversity and nature-based experiences for city residents.
    • Yet, to ensure these benefits, it is critical to care for urban forests using approaches that are informed by their condition and context. To that end, the Urban Silviculture guide offers a framework for conducting silviculture in urban or community settings, starting with assessment, to planning and goal-setting, operations, and monitoring.
  • Connecting on the empowerment of communities for environmental assessments and monitoring, we look forward to hearing from Dan TerAvest, PhD, Soil Scientist & Cofounder of Our Sci LLC: Our-Sci.net evolves open source tools which empower community exploration of data: Users can collect interoperable data to conduct soil health, biodiversity, or other assessments that can back up climate resilience claims
