Quartz OA LBGTQIA+ Awards

Quartz OA Awards want to support LGBTQIA+ scientists and initiatives to make academia a better - more inclusive and equal - place. That’s why we are launching campaigns on Open Collective and Gitcoin and invite you to donate. We pledge to match the received donations up to 1000 USD and invite other collectives and institutions to join us in this effort. The funds raised will then be donated to the initiatives and individuals that will be chosen by you, the donors of the academic community!

Friends, colleagues and peers,

We are excited to announce the launch of a series of Quartz OA crowdfunding initiatives to support fair, just and equitable academic publishing! We are opening this series with crowdfunding in support of LGBTQIA+ in academia.

Academia may well seem a place where you are supposed to be judged uniquely by your research outputs rather than your gender identity or sexual orientation. Research and personal experiences of scholars, however, tell a different story. A story about workplace discrimination as well as more subtle and nuanced challenges, such as those trans scientists face when trying to have their name change recognised by their institutions.

So, we want to support LGBTQIA+ scientists and initiatives to make academia a more inclusive and equal place. We are launching campaigns on Open collective and Gitcoin and invite you to donate. We pledge to match the received donations up to 1000 USD and invite other collectives and institutions to join us in this effort. The funds raised will then be donated to the initiatives and individuals that will be chosen by the academic community. See more on how it works →

Whom do we want to support?

  • individual scholars actively advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights in the academia
  • LGBTQIA+ initiatives launched by scholarly societies or other academic communities to promote inclusivity and equal treatment
  • independent open access academic publishing initiatives - either focusing on research in the fields of LGBTQIA+ or gender studies or those having explicit LGBTQIA+ policies

How does it work?

  1. We invite you to go to Open collective or Gitcoin and donate as much - or as little! - as you like, any contribution is welcome! Donations will be open till 15th September.
  2. Once you have contributed, you will receive a personal invitation to join our Discord channel to propose initiatives/individuals that you would like to see supported. The possibility to nominate will be open until 30th August. And yes, you can nominate yourself or the organisation you belong to! ;)
  3. We will go through all suggestions to make sure they meet the participation criteria outlined above and compile a shortlist. We will then contact the shortlisted individuals/initiatives to make sure they are on board. Finally, we will compile a final list and open it for voting for the academic community.
  4. Using our discord channel, vote on the proposals to select who will be supported from 13th September till 20th September.
  5. The final awards ceremony will take place on September 24th.
