Core Infrastructure
PROJECT
Part of: RIT Open Source Community
Fiscal Host: Open Source Collective
Keep the RIT Open Source Community running. Fund essential domains and hosting costs to secure our future independence and growth.
About
💻 Secure the Digital Foundation of the RIT Open Source Community (Phase One)
For years, the RIT Open Source Community has been an independent hub for students, alumni, and friends dedicated to Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). This community built projects and hosted resources that defined our shared RIT experience.
The Opportunity: Building Financial Independence
The annual infrastructure costs we present below are modest, and dedicated members could cover them internally. However, this initiative is about more than paying bills. This is Phase One: establishing the RIT Open Source Community's financial independence.
We seek visionaries who understand that successfully crowdfunding these foundational costs validates our independent funding model. This small success unlocks the potential to fund higher-impact initiatives, such as travel sponsorships for RIT students attending major FOSS conferences, moving our focus from simple maintenance to student empowerment.
💰 Our Immediate Financial Need (Annual)
Your contribution shifts these essential, recurring costs from individuals to a sustainable collective fund.
- Domain Renewal (fossrit.community): $40 annually.
- Domain Renewal (teleirc.com): $15 annually.
- Hosting (DigitalOcean Droplet for Discourse Forum): $180 annually (approximately $15/month).
Our Total Annual Target for Core Infrastructure is $235.
(Note: The Open Collective platform and our Fiscal Host ensure complete financial transparency for all contributions and expenses.)
🚀 Visionary Impact: From Foundation to Empowerment
Funding our core infrastructure secures our continuity. More importantly, this proof of concept allows us to scale immediately toward significant future goals:
- Empowering Students: Launching a dedicated fund for student travel grants to major open source events.
- Scaling Projects: Providing the resources and infrastructure needed to back student FOSS projects and new community initiatives.
By supporting this initiative today, you invest in the future independence and vitality of the RIT Open Source community.
