Community outreach update: Nov 28, 2023
Published on November 28, 2023 by Maggie Clarke
Hello lovely supporters!
This has been a challenging year for our community. As Mayor Bass’ “Inside Safe” program has ramped up, we have seen even more displacement of unhoused neighbors as they are moved between hotels, and exited from programs like the Harbor City Tiny Homes back onto the streets. Despite the weaknesses of Inside Safe, many of our folks are desperate to get inside. Unfortunately, the number of hotel rooms is never enough for everyone and even many of those who have gotten inside continue to rely on our weekly distro as an essential resource for life sustaining supplies, medical care, and loving community.

Every week we continue to see dozens of unhoused neighbors at our distro table where we work to address essential needs by providing items including clothing, hygiene supplies, harm reduction supplies, pet food, tents, and bedding. Everything we bring to the camp each week comes from donations from supporters like you! We are also fortunate to host comrades like All Power Free Clinic who provide desperately needed medical support, haircuts and supplies at distro.

The camp pets are such an integral part of the community and we always try to support our camp pet parents with food, toys, and funds for the vet.

Outside of our weekly distro, we engage with our neighbors seven days a week! This includes providing court support, assisting individuals in navigating through sweeps, accompanying them to medical appointments, aiding with obtaining IDs from the DMV, and facilitating access to DPSS for benefits cards.
Pre-sweep prep in the rain
In recent months, this camp has been swept multiple times per month, meaning that every two weeks residents are required to move all of their belongings out of the camp for “cleaning.” We support residents by being present at sweeps, helping move items, monitoring what happens, and providing meals afterwards for those whose food was thrown out.

The continued support from compassionate individuals like you is what empowers us to make a tangible difference in the lives of these community members. Each contribution, whether big or small, plays a pivotal role in creating a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. Thank you for standing with us on this meaningful journey of support and advocacy. Your commitment truly makes a profound and lasting impact.
