About

What is SPEC?
SPEC is an open learning organization that empowers individuals to be catalysts for positive change. We provide mentoring, training, internships, and host events to help individuals from underrepresented backgrounds learn the essential skills required to build sustainable careers and make a positive impact in their communities.

Who are we?
Dr. Rhianna Rogers, founder of the Buffalo Project came together with Joe Torreggiani to re-imagine and amplify its positive impact. The Buffalo Project has a track history of building successful programming at prestigious institutions and think tanks in the U.S. and abroad. Our team has a robust history of active involvement in social justice initiatives via trainings, college credits, micro-credentials, forums, panels, and research such as the "Building Community in Times of Social Unrest" and other Deliberative Conversations, The Stevens Initiative,  and Introduction to Feminist Thought and Action.

What do we do?
SPEC expands the reach of environmental and social justice initiatives through the use of open-source and sustainable technologies. Some of our initiatives include:
  • CITISEN (Community Innovation and Technology Internship for a Sustainable and Equitable Nation) mentoring and training program
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programming and outreach
  • Micro-credentials
What does our CITISEN mentoring and training program look like?
  • Paid mentorship program designed to create and sustain long term careers
  • Programs focused on professional development and STEAM training (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics)
  • Training our CITISENs to utilize technology as a community building platform
What is DEI programming?
  • Host summits, roundtables, and other events
  • Provide workshops and offer training services
  • Curriculums integrated with DEI and STEAM competencies
What are micro-credentials?
  • Provide immersive workplace training in essential skills
  • Built by a diverse community continuously integrating learner feedback
  • Self-paced accessible modular coursework that stacks related competencies
Are we a 501(c)(3)?
Not yet! But you can still make a tax deductible donations to us here on Open Collective thanks to our fiscal host the Open Collective Foundation 501(c)(3). We like this platform because it aligns with our values of openness and sustainability.

How can you get involved?
If you want to learn more, apply to be one of our CITISENs, or partner with us in another way please email us at [email protected]
