Kantamanto market fire - Informal fire safety
PROJECT
Open source
Fiscal Host: IE Collective UK
The purpose of this project is to fund the rebuilding of market trade in Kantamanto market trade, and to research fire proof materials to build informal market stalls in Ghana

About
On 1st January 2025 starting around 10am, a fire started in Kantamanto Marker. The Or Foundation reported around 60% of the market was burned down. This was reported to be the biggest fire in markets history in decades. It is estimated more than 8,890 stalls have been destroyed. Few people have died in the aftermath of the fire. But Ghanaians are highly resilient people. They are building the market back up and quite quickly, it is amazing to watch.
In 2023, the IE Collective UK founder, Enna Uwaifo, interviewed a group of market traders, and I am still in contact with them. To support them building back their stalls, I have set up this page. You will receive updates on the building up the markets so we can watch the progress of Kantamanto being built back up and you can support the build with financial contributions.
A non-financial contribution would be how the market traders can rethink the materials they use, so what are some more fire-proof materials to help them. If anyone is an expert or has useful tips, we can share that with them on the ground
We are highlighting this story as the skin-tone bias in the media means that Kantamanto market's fire has not recieved much coverage. We hope this to be a place where people can real time watch the rebuilding of Kantamanto market and challenge colourist media when it comes environmental issues and fairer distribution of attentional resources to the issues in West Africa.
